"The Last Echo" by Kimberly Derting

Release Date: April 17th, 2012
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 358

From Goodreads: "In the end, all that's left is an echo...

Violet kept her morbid ability to sense dead bodies a secret from everyone except her family and her childhood-best-friend-turned-boyfriend, Jay Heaton. That is until forensic psychologist Sara Priest discovered Violet's talent and invited her to use her gift to track down murderers. Now, as she works with an eclectic group of individuals—including mysterious and dangerously attractive Rafe—it's Violet's job to help those who have been murdered by bringing their killers to justice. When Violet discovers the body of a college girl killed by "the girlfriend collector" she is determined to solve the case. But now the serial killer is on the lookout for a new "relationship" and Violet may have caught his eye...."

Jay and Violet have been one of my most favourite literary couples of all time, however, I must admit that I was a bit disappointed by their relationship in this book. I HATED the fact that Violet was so dependent on Jay in this book (I know, I know, in the previous books he helped to ground her and everything but she was still overall quite independent), but in this book she quite literally followed him around like a puppy (something she herself alludes to a few times in this book and yet something that she did nothing to rectify). Also, I disliked the role that Rafe played in this book (Those fears that many of us had that Rafe would become the third part of a love triangle? Well, let's just say that while they are not entirely confirmed, they are also not entirely unfounded), which led to us seeing a completely different side of Jay, the jealous boyfriend side (also, am I alone in thinking that overall Jay played little role in this book? I think that he BY FAR played the smallest role in this book than he did in the other two).

While I did think that the Girlfriend Collector aspect of this book was quite engaging, keeping me on the edge of my seat as I read it (especially those last couple of chapters that took place in the barn), I did find myself feeling tiresome that this series features yet another serial killer. There has got to be other people that Violet can use her abilities to track, right? I mean, Jess Mastriani from Meg Cabot's "1-800-Where-R-You" series sure seemed to find all sorts of people with her abilities.

That being said, I did overall enjoy the book- I LIVED for the parts (which were obviously few and far between) where it was just Jay and Violet by themselves without any Rafe, serial killers, special ops units, or anything of the likes. Also, I did enjoy learning more about Violet's team- it was nice to get all of their back stories and have all of the skeletons in their closets revealed (dare I say I also enjoyed learning about Rafe's past? It's nice to finally have an idea of why he is the way that he is now). And I will OBVIOUSLY still continue on reading this series (and anything else that Kimberly Derting happens to write).

Rating: 8/10

DAMMIT!!!! Violet NOOOOOOOOO! That's a bit disappointing, as is the fact that Jay is relegated to the background in this one, but I do love this series so I'm hoping my love will carry me through even though this isn't the strongest installment. Thanks for the review Avery!

  3. Ohhh yes, I think I pretty much agree with you on all of this. It was GOOD, but not great, mainly because of the lack of Jay, and how that sort of kind of not really love triangle aspect of it. The thing is, I actually really like Rafe and find him very interesting. Just... not with Violet, because Violet/Jay are one of the best couples in YA, and messing with them is just... no, very very bad.
