"Turned" by Morgan Rice

Turned (Book #1 in the Vampire Journals)From Goodreads: "Eighteen year old Caitlin Paine finds herself uprooted from her nice suburb and forced to attend a dangerous New York City high school when her Mom moves again. The one ray of light in her new surroundings is Jonah, a new classmate who takes an instant liking to her.

But before their romance can blossom, Caitlin suddenly finds herself changing. She is overcome by a superhuman strength, a sensitivity to light, a desire to feed--by feelings she does not understand. She seeks answers to what’s happening to her, and her cravings lead her to the wrong place at the wrong time. Her eyes are opened to a hidden world, right beneath her feet, thriving underground in New York City. She finds herself caught between two dangerous covens, right in the middle of a vampire war.

It is at this moment that Caitlin meets Caleb, a mysterious and powerful vampire who rescues her from the dark forces. He needs her to help lead him to the legendary lost artifact. And she needs him for answers, and for protection. Together, they will need to answer one crucial question: who was her real father?

But Caitlin finds herself caught between two men as something else arises between them: a forbidden love. A love between the races that will risk both of their lives, and will force them to decide whether to risk it all for each other…"

Admittedly I am a cover slut (as in the words of Melissa over at I Swim For Oceans) and therefore when I saw the cover of this book (and the covers of the other three books in this series) I knew that these were books that I HAD. TO. READ.  This cover contains some of my most favourite characteristics in YA literature, vampires, bad-ass heroines, a seemingly dark story lines, etc.

However, after having read this book I see that I was a bit deceived. While the book is about vampires and has a somewhat darker story line, when compared to other YA books, it does not possess a bad-ass heroine, at least not yet- (I do have complete faith though that with time Caitlin can grow into a completely bad-ass female character -a la Lili St. Crow's Dru or Chloe Neill's Merit- that is, once she gets over her insta-love- at times bordering on obsession- with Caleb.

As mentioned, this book does possess an insta-love story line and while it is a frustrating as we do not really see any leading up to the characters falling in love, it isn't the worst insta-love story line I have read before (*cough, cough, "Tris and Izzie"*). I think that my biggest complaint about this book is the development,  I want to know more (ie. I don't know much about Caleb's personality, save for the fact that he has a thing for saving damsels in distress, or Morgan's vampires have wings, but she doesn't describe what sort they are- are they angel-like? Bat-like? Wings are very important and deserve lots of description ;) )!

All in all, this is an extremely fast paced, easy to read, storyline. I think that those occupying the lower ends of the YA spectrum (ie. 13-16 year olds) will gobble up this book- especially if they are fans of Stephanie Meyer's "Twilight" series.

Rating: 7/10

I received this book from the author to read and honestly review. I was not compensated in any way for said review.

  1. Too bad the heroine isn't quite as bad ass as Merit (she kind of rocks) and while the insta-love often drives me crazy, it still sounds like this was an enjoyable read. Nice review Avery:)

  2. Well, if it isn't the worst, it's still not great. However, if it didn't bother you too much, sounds like it still will be a fun read. Hope she does grown into a bad ass character. ;)
